The Biden administration announced Monday that it will impose new restrictions on the export of advanced artificial intelligence chips. It will also set out guidelines for AI system owners to follow when using them.
As AI becomes more powerful, the risks to our national security are growing, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told reporters. The new rules, which add to the restrictions imposed in 2023, will restrict the export of AI chips to China. The restrictions also include restrictions on AI chips to countries that the United States has embargoed.
The announcement is another example of China’s general disregard for national security and the misuse of export controls, according to China’s Ministry of Commerce. China said it was a violation of international economic and trade rules and would respond with necessary measures.
