Negotiators seeking a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas reached a deal late on Wednesday that could lead to a ceasefire, people familiar with the talks said on January 13.
The talks, brokered by the United States, Egypt and Qatar, have been stalled for months, but the progress comes as the United States looks set to accelerate efforts to reach an agreement as a new administration nears.
The basic terms of the deal include a ceasefire, the release of hostages held by Hamas, the release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel and increased humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said in an interview with CNN on Sunday that an agreement to end the Israeli-Hamas war is “very close.” More than 15 months later, efforts are underway to free the 98 hostages still being held. Of those 98, two-thirds are believed to be alive.
President Joe Biden said he discussed the progress of the talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday.
