India shows no interest in deporting Sheikh Hasina

India has shown no sign of giving in to India’s request to extradite ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to face trial, saying it has received Bangladesh’s request to extradite her to face trial, but has nothing to say on the matter, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said.

Hasina was flown in by the military, and the extradition request is only possible if there is a proven case of a crime, according to a bilateral treaty on extradition. There are also political exceptions and a clause that guarantees her safe and fair treatment, so if those conditions are not met, the request may be rejected, former Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty told VOA via WhatsApp.

Bangladesh, which is investigating domestic war crimes, The Dhaka-based International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Hasina and her associates on charges of crimes against humanity.
